Another city that might not ring any bells, is Chengdu. If you really want to see pandas in China, then the Giant Panda Research Breeding Center is the place to go. This place is huge (there is a tram service that runs throughout), and filled with pandas of all ages. All but the very small, are housed in open enclosures, so viewing is excellent.
You could easily spend an entire day here, or if you have limited time, use the tram and hit some of the key spots. It is a gorgeous walk, though.
In addition to the pandas, there is also an underground market in the center of the city, and also another famous shopping are nearby called Wide and Narrow Alley, filled with all sorts of souvenirs and restaurants. Plan at least a couple of days in the area to take it all in.
