Not too far outside of Shanghai near Suzhou, is a place reminiscent of the San Antonio Riverwalk in Texas, called Tongli Water Town. There are no roads in this village, but canals lined with shops and restaurants, and residential dwellings. It is very scenic, and worth spending as much time here as you can. Be sure to wander the back alleys, as the shops there provide even better discounts than can be found on the main thoroughfares.
